Way too many people suffer in silence with poorly fitting dentures. Many have had the same dentures for over 20 years. During that period of time the tissues in their mouths have changed and the denture teeth have worn down. Perhaps a few teeth are chipped or missing. As a result, the dentures have become ill-fitting resulting in sore spots, looseness, clacking when chewing and make the patient look “old and grumpy”. Gone is the nice smile that makes people feel confident and not hide from the camera at family events.
Fortunately, it doesn’t need to be that way. Unfortunately, most dentists really don’t know how to help. Denture technique is not well taught in dental schools. Many young dental graduates actually graduate from dental school having done as few as one denture! Many justify the less than adequate education and training with the belief that dentures are a dying art. The thought process continues that with the advent of implants there are “better” options for tooth replacement. While implants can be an extremely viable option for tooth replacement, the fact remains that they are a very expensive one and frequently out of the financial reach of many people, especially people living on a fixed income. In addition, as people age, medical conditions may exist that preclude the placement of implants. In these situations, a set of great fitting dentures is an excellent option.
Denture materials and techniques have improved dramatically over the years. As a result, dentures can now be made that are better than ever. Denture teeth are extremely natural looking and the denture base materials are light weight, stain resistant and long-lasting.
Like most products and services, there are different levels of quality of dentures. This allows dentures to be designed to fit nearly any budget. If your existing dentures are structurally in good shape and your mouth tissues have not significantly changed and are basically healthy, you may only need to have your dentures relined which could be a significant cost savings. Just like dentures, there are different levels of reline that can also fit nearly every budget.
But, a word of caution. Dentures that are advertised at an extremely low price and stated to be “ready in a day” are frequently of very low quality, poorly fitting and don’t last very long. In dentistry, like everything else, you do get what you pay for. Many people who have fallen for this type of denture report that they only wear their dentures to look better in public but take them out as soon as they get home and can’t wear them to eat. What a waste of money regardless of the initial cheap price!!
